The 2nd of April kickstarts National Autism Awareness Month with World Autism Awareness Day, which aims to celebrate neurodiversity and increase autism visibility and promote acceptance and understanding within our society. And with an estimated 700,000 children and adults on the autism spectrum in the UK alone, World Autism Awareness Day is a hugely important event.
This year marked the 16th consecutive year of the internationally recognised day, and lots of people were keen to show their support here in North Yorkshire.
Ahead of the day, Hog Roast Skipton’s team was approached by Julia, who was keen for us to provide catering for the event she played a key role in organising. As a mum of two autistic children herself, Julia dedicates a lot of her time to raising autism awareness and finding ways to support other parents of neurodivergent children.
So, in the lead-up to Autism Awareness Day 2023, she, and a small team of like-minded individuals, had planned an event which involved talks from experts about the history of autism, as well as speeches from autistic adults and their relatives, educational activities and autism-friendly workshops for everyone to take part in.
It was an honour for Hog Roast Skipton to be included in this event, and our catering manager, Steven, was determined to make Julia proud with our esteemed hog roast buffet.
This fabulous feast of slow-roasted pulled pork, savoury sage and onion stuffing, applesauce and crispy crackling was served on gluten-free and wholemeal rolls to hundreds of guests throughout the day. Hog Roast Skipton’s team also whipped up a huge batch of sweet potato and regular fries, creamy coleslaw and brightly coloured salads to pair with this scrumptious banquet, along with a plant-based option of BBQ-pulled jackfruit rolls with vegan ‘slaw, which went down a real treat with the non-meat-eating attendees!
Julia was really glad that she decided to trust Hog Roast Skipton with the catering at this event, and with Steven in charge, everything ran smoothly, which completely minimised the stress the host had to deal with. The guests were really pleased to see us too, and thoroughly enjoyed our tasty hog roast rolls!
