Remember your own prom night? Yeah, same. Dodgy rental tux, a dress from Jane Norman if you were lucky, maybe a quick spray tan gone slightly wrong. Music blasting from a CD player – probably Now That’s What I Call [insert your graduation year] – on repeat and a paper plate full of dry sandwiches and cocktail sausages.
Well, not anymore.
Proms have seriously levelled up. These days it’s all about red carpet entrances and themed decor that puts wedding venues to shame. Hog Roast Malton saw this first-hand when we catered a prom night in North Yorkshire recently. Private school. PTA with big ideas. They went all out.
The theme? Enchanted forest. I kid you not – giant mushrooms (that glowed, by the way), hanging vines, fairy lights everywhere, and the whole hall bathed in soft green light. The students even leaned into it with flower crowns, glitter on their faces, fake antlers, the works. Some even showed up in limos or – get this – a lorry cab decked out like a magical woodland.
So yeah, not exactly your average disco in the school gym.
Naturally, Hog Roast Malton was called in to feed the fairy folk. And we weren’t about to dish up basic buffet bits. We started off with a round of canapés: mini fish and chips in cones, duck wraps with spring rolls, chicken satay, and baby pizzas. Everyone walked around nibbling with fruit juice in fancy glasses (with a fizzy lemonade twist, of course). They’re still school kids after all.
For the main event, they had options. Proper hog roast with crispy crackling. Whole chickens roasted up with chipolata sausages. And veggie skewers (some with halloumi, some without) that came with a refreshing tzatziki dip. On the side, creamy coleslaw, Caesar salad, tomato and mozzarella slices, and dauphinoise potatoes that were baked in full-fat cream for the ultimate indulgence.
Dessert was a mix of sticky toffee pudding and fresh fruit salads, because you need balance, right?
Hog Roast Malton absolutely nailed this event, and even when we were packed up and almost gone, people were still stopping us to say how good the food was. That’s always a win in our book.
So, prom night’s not what it used to be. And honestly? That’s not a bad thing. Magical themes, happy faces, and full stomachs. What more could you want?
